The Hungarian National Museum’s Weapon Storage Cabinet

Description: The Hungarian National Museum’s Weapon Storage Cabinet is one of the basic collections of the institution to which the first weapons were introduced in 1807. From the 11th century until today, the Weapon Cabinet holds 10 588 pieces of artwork. The collection does not only keeps weapons, but also harnesses and flags. The collection houses saddles from the 15th century to the end of the 19th century. The most remarkable of them are three bone ones painted blue from the first half of the 15th century. Particularly remarkable items are the 16-17th century Hungarian, Turkish and Transylvanian saddles, many of which also has their ornate harnesses as well preserved. The earliest flag is the red silk banner of István Bocskai, Prince of Transylvanian while the latest military flag comes from the Horthy era. The most important weapon of cold weapons is the sword collection, which includes a large number of sabers, different types of daggers, broadswords. Maces and axes make one group of weapons and spears, pikes and halberds make the other distinct group. Defense weapons from the 14th century include helmets, breast- and backplates, shirts of mail and full armours.

Monitoring: Within the context of the EU funded APACHE project, the Hungarian National Museum will monitor, collect, analyse and report on environmental data collected in the storage room and a weapon storage cabinet containing weapons. Environmental data include temperature and relative humidity and pollutants (formaldehyde, organic acids, NO₂ , SO₂ , O₃ , H₂S).
